What is a Guardian Home?

Guardian homes allow us to expand our program while ensuring that each and every dog has an incredible life as a family pet! Guardians get one of our best puppies without spending thousands of dollars. Our breeding dogs live their entire lives with their guardian families and only come back to us for breedings or while raising their puppies. When they are retired from the breeding program, we pay for the dog to be spayed or neutered.

Perks:

  1. You get one of our BEST puppies, typically our pick of the litter, for only $500 (guardian fee) instead of our typical pet price of $3,500.

  2. We gift our guardian families cash for each litter produced, typically $100 for papas and $500 for mamas! We whelp, raise, and care for all of the puppies!

  3. We will pay for your first training class with Dianne Keck of Neuro Dog Training, or your first puppy preschool class at the Zoom Room!

  4. We will pay for up to 5 training classes with Neuro Dog Training if you get him/her Canine Good Citizen Titled! (Cost of 5 classes will be reimbursed after CGC title is awarded.)

  5. We pay for your dog to be thoroughly health tested (DNA, OFAs, PennHIP), as well as the cost of all health care related to breeding.

  6. We pay to spay or neuter your dog at his/her "retirement".

Requirements:

  1. Guardians must live within an hour's drive from our home in New River and not plan to move out of area for at least the next 5 years.

  2. Guardians cannot own another intact dog. Neutered/spayed dogs are OK!

  3. The dog must dwell primarily indoors, be kept up to date on vaccines, free of parasites, and be kept well groomed. Poodles & doodles need to be professionally groomed and clipped a minimum of every 8 wks with thorough brushing in between to prevent matting.

  4. Just as you would for any pet, you'd be responsible for all "normal" dog expenses, including food and grooming.

  5. Must commit to and complete our 4 month S.M.A.R+.T. puppy training and socialization program with our trainer. Guardians are only to use positive reinforcement, desensitization, and counter conditioning training methods. Use of aversive training methods such as shock collars, prong collars, or physical punishment is not permitted.

  6. For female dogs, the family must be willing to have the dog live with us for up to 9 weeks to whelp and nurse her puppies. Our goal for most females is to have 3 to 4 litters. If you're unable to be separated from your dog for extended periods of time, this program is not right for you. Guardian families are allowed to visit up to every 2 weeks after the pups are 4 weeks of age. This is a great way for our pups to get socialization!
For males, we may only need him for a couple of hours or a couple of days at a time, but this can be several times per year, which requires a flexible schedule! For males and females, guardians are responsible for all transportation to/from veterinary appointments, breedings, etc.

  7. Sonoran Standard retains legal ownership of the dog until his or her "retirement" and spay or neuter.
